Horace Annesley Vachell
(1861-1955), Novelist and playwrightSitter in 3 portraits
As a young man, Vachell travelled to California where he was a partner in a land company. He had returned to England by 1900 and turned his attention to writing, going on to produce more than fifty novels and volumes of short stories, as well as plays, essays and several autobiographical books. Perhaps his most popular success was The Hill (1905), which gives an idealised view of life at Harrow and of the friendship between two boys. His most successful play was Quinneys (1914), which was made into a film in 1927. Another play, The Case of Lady Camber (1915), was the basis for Hitchcock's 1932 film Lord Camber's Ladies.
