The Italian decorative artist Antonio Verrio was employed by King Charles II from 1675 to produce large baroque wall and ceiling paintings of mythological and biblical themes at Windsor Castle and Whitehall. He was appointed 'principal Gardiner and Surveyor to the King' in 1684. As a firm Catholic, Verrio initially declined to work for the Protestant King William III after the revolution of 1688 but returned to royal employment in 1699.
