George Wade
(1673-1748), Field MarshalEarly Georgian Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter in 6 portraits
Field-Marshal. His early career was distinguished by service as a commander in Flanders and Spain during the War of Spanish Succession. From 1726, he built a series of military roads in Scotland, opening up the most distant parts of the Highlands, and he proceeded with the disarming of the Highland clans. Ironically, however, in 1745 Wade's fine roads actually assisted Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite troops' passage through Scotland. Wade himself headed thirteen batallions who marched north to halt the uprising, but he was outwitted by the Jacobites' tactics, route and speed.
