Critic and controversial theological writer. He was literary executor and editor of Alexander Pope. His major publication, the Divine Legation of Moses, 1737-41, concerning the truth of Christianity, plunged him into lasting controversy. He rejected the views of Wesley in the Doctrine of Grace. He preached against the slave trade in 1766.
