Wemyss's spent his early Naval career in service on royal yachts. During the First World War, he worked in co-operation with services ashore, and was in charge of landing operations at Helles, Gallipoli in 1915. As Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies and Egypt station (1916-17), he supported Allenby's advance into Palestine, and gave help to T.E. Lawrence during the Arab uprising. He replaced Jellicoe as First Sea Lord in 1917, and was then promoted to admiral of the fleet in 1919.
