William Frederick Yeames

(1835-1918), Painter

Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 8 portraits
Born in Russia, Yeames moved to London in 1848 where he studied art and anatomy. He spent several years in Italy, studying painting in Florence and Rome. He returned to London in 1859 and was a founder member of the St John's Wood Clique, an informal group that represented a new spirit in English history painting. They were neither Pre-Raphaelite nor traditional in affiliation but combined in their work features of several kinds of painting, including history, and genre. Yeames's lasting fame rests almost entirely upon one painting, And When Did You Last See Your Father? The events of the civil wars are concentrated in the reactions of a little boy who is being interrogated by a parliamentary officer.
