An academic, educationalist and politician, Blackstone has held numerous public offices. She was Minister of State for Education and Employment (1997-2001) and Minister of State for Arts (2001-3) in the Labour government. In the academic field, she has been Professor of Educational Administration at the Institute of Education (1978-83), Director of Education at ILEA (1983-7), Master of Birkbeck College (1987-97) and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich (2004-11). She was awarded a life peerage in 1987, becoming Baroness Blackstone of Stoke Newington. She has published several books on education and social policy, including Disadvantage and Education (with Jo Mortimore, 1982), Inside the Think Tank: advising the Cabinet 1971-83 (1988) and Prisons and Penal Reform (1990).
