Blake graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1956. His work has always engaged with popular culture, from Children Reading Comics (1954) and ABC Minors (1955). He moved with his then wife, the artist Jann Haworth, to Wellow in Wiltshire in 1969, and in 1975 co-founded the short-lived Brotherhood of Ruralists. Blake was the chronicler of the Pop scene, in works ranging from Beachboys (1962), the first Trichromatic halftone silkscreen, to Madonna of Venice Beach I (1996).
