Alexandre Dumas
(1802-1870), NovelistSitter in 9 portraits
French-born novelist and playwright, Dumas established his reputation with books including The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-5), The Three Muskateers (1844) and La Reine Margot (1845). During the 1850s, several of Dumas's plays were staged in London including Mademoiselle de Belle Isle (July 1851) and Les Demoiselles de St. Cyr (May 1853) at the St James Theatre. In January 1858, he was the subject of a court case brought by writer M. Maquet, who declared he was the co-author of eighteen of Dumas's novels. The case 'excited unusual interest in the literary world'(The Times, 6 February 1858) and was settled firmly in Dumas's favour.
