Derek Ezra joined the Liberal party in 1936, while at university. After the Second World War, he joined the newly formed National Coal Board (NCB). He remained in the coal industry for thirty-five years, during the last eleven of which he was chairman of the NCB. He was elevated to the life peerage as Baron Ezra, of Horsham in the County of West Sussex in 1983. He was the Liberal Democrats' Spokesman for Energy Matters between 1998 and 2005.
