Elizabeth, Countess of Essex, was born Lady Elizabeth Percy. She was the fifth daughter of Algernon Percy, Earl of Northumberland, and his first wife, Anne, daughter of William Cecil, second Earl of Salisbury. Following the death of her brother Joceline in 1670, Elizabeth became the last heir of the Percy family. In 1653 she married Arthur Capel, 1st Earl of Essex, and the couple had two children, a son and a daughter.
