Quintin McGarel Hogg, 1st Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone

A fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, Hogg was called to the Bar in 1932 and elected as a Conservative MP in 1938. On the outbreak of World War II he joined the Rifle Brigade and served in the Far East until he was wounded in 1941. After the war he combined his duties as an MP with his continued practice at the Bar. He succeeded to his father's peerage in 1950 and spent several years away from Parliament until in 1956 he accepted the post of First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1963 he renounced his title and re-entered the House of Commons as Conservative MP for St Marylebone. He was twice Lord Chancellor, from 1970 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1987.
