Trade union leader and writer. Educated at Port Talbot County School and Swansea Technical College, Jenkins started work in a metallurgical test house in 1940. In 1946 he began working for the Association of Scientific Workers, and the rest of his life was dedicated to being a professional trades unionist. Jenkins built up the membership and amalgamated smaller unions until, in 1970, the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTAMS) was the largest white-collar union. He listed among his recreations in Who's Who 'organising the middle classes'. He was as President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the first to recognise the power of the media.
