Allen Jones

(1937-), Artist

Sitter in 13 portraits
Artist of 3 portraits
Painter, sculptor and printmaker. Born in Southampton, Jones studied at Hornsey College of Art (1955-59) and the Royal College of Art (1959-60), where he became associated with the emergence of Pop Art. His first exhibition was held in 1963. Jones is known for his brightly coloured, abstracted paintings, which from the early 1960s included commercial, sexual and glamorous imagery, sometimes fusing male and female figures. An erotic or fetishistic element became pronounced from the mid-late 1960s. His later work includes metal cut-outs. Jones was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1986.
