Beatrice Gladys Lillie (Lady Peel)

Born Beatrice Gladys Lillie in Toronto she made her début on the London musical stage in 1914. During the First World War she performed in various revues produced by André Charlot, displaying enormous comic talent. In 1924 Lillie made her first Broadway appearance in one of Charlot's shows, establishing her as an international star. She performed regularly in revues between 1914 and 1939. In 1952 she toured in a one woman show entitled An Evening With Beatrice Lillie. Her last stage appearance was in New York in High Spirits (1964). She made several film cameos, one such as Mrs Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). Her autobiography, Every Other Inch a Lady was published in 1973
