Sportsman. Lowther left Eton aged just twelve to take up outdoor pursuits. On the death of his elder brother George Henry Lowther, in 1882 Lowther became the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. As the first president of the National Sporting Club, he donated the first Lonsdale belt in 1909 for the boxing championship trophy. He was also associated with the management of Arsenal Football club. Lowther devoted his enormous wealth, derived from the Cumberland coalmines, to a life of ostentatious pleasure. His fondness of yellow for his many cars and footmen's livery inspired his nickname 'The Yellow Earl'.
