Robert MacBryde

(1913-1966), Painter

Sitter in 2 portraits
Scottish decorative painter of still-life and figure subjects. MacBryde studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he met his lifelong companion Robert Colquhoun. Inseparable since their childhood in Ayrshire, they were jointly known as 'the Roberts'. Both became familiar London figures and for a while shared a house with John Minton. Stage designs before and after the Second World War include Gielgud's Macbeth and Massine's ballet Donald of the Burthens. MacBryde's paintings of figures, animals and organic forms reflect the influence of both Graham Sutherland and John Piper.
