Reginald Maudling

(1917-1979), Politician; Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary

Sitter associated with 17 portraits
An intellectually gifted politician, known for his political pragmatism and easy-going nature. He volunteered on the outbreak of World War II and worked in RAF intelligence. Following the war he took up a career in politics, unsuccessfully standing for Parliament before joining the Conservative Parliamentary Secretariat. Elected as a Conservative MP in 1950, Maudling held many prominent political offices including President of the Board of Trade (1959-61) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1962-4). He established a reputation as an economics expert but is remembered for his 1963 'dash for growth' budget, creating a short-lived boom that contributed to the Conservative's defeat in the 1964 election.
