Marshal of the RAF. Portal served with the RFC during the First World War; in 1940 he succeeded Lord Newall as Chief of Air Staff and won Churchill's admiration for his skill in co-operating with other services and with his American colleagues. He was regarded by President Eisenhower as the greatest of British war leaders.
