Francis Pym was elected as a Conservative MP in 1961 and remained in the House of Commons until being raised to the peerage as Baron Pym in 1987. He worked as a Whip before being appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1973. He later served as Defence Secretary and was Foreign Secretary during the Falklands Crisis on 1982. He was regarded as a leading member of the 'Wets' during the Thatcher administration and was dropped from the government following the Conservative's 1983 election victory, after which he launched a short-lived pressure group, Conservative Centre Forward, to argue for more centrist policies.
