Dame Mary Quant

Fashion designer. Born in London, Quant studied illustration at Goldsmiths College before taking a job as an apprentice milliner. She began to work in fashion design in 1955 with the opening of her first boutique, Bazaar, on King's Road, co-founded with her future husband Alexander Plunket Greene and their friend Archie McNair. The prices were low and instigated a new era in style, one in which fashion was for everyone. Quant became known for her geometric and vibrant designs, especially for popularising the miniskirt, which became synonymous with 'Swinging London'. In 1966, Quant was awarded an OBE for services to the fashion industry.
