Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to hold the office in Britain and was re-elected twice, in 1983 and 1987. Educated at Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School and Somerville College, Oxford, her first career was as a research chemist (1947-51). She was called to the Bar, Lincoln's Inn, in 1954 and specialised in tax law. Her career at the House of Commons began when she was elected MP for Finchley in 1959. Created a Life Peer in 1992.
