Dame Dorothy Tutin

(1930-2001), Actress

Sitter in 9 portraits
Stage and film actress who began her career in 1950 and joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1958. Particularly known for her classic repertoire, she has played all the leading female roles in Shakespeare and Chekhov, most memorably Ophelia, Juliet and Viola. In 1961 her first major appearance in a contemporary play came as Sister Jeanne in John Whiting's The Devils at the Aldwych She went on to West End success in both classic and modern roles and to appear in a number of films including playing Sophie Brzeska in Savage Messiah (1972). She received the Evening Standard award for Best Actress for Natalya in A Month in the Country (Albery 1975).
