Admiral of the Fleet; took part in the attack on the Bismarck (1941); escorted convoys during early part of the war, showed courage and resourcefulness when Malta convoy engaged Italian battle fleet (May 1942); took part in the invasion of Sicily (1943); commanded Eastern Task Force in invasion of Normandy (1944).
