(1930-2024), Surgeon

Sir Roy Yorke Calne

Sitter in 3 portraits
A leading transplant surgeon, Calne was Professor of Surgery at Cambridge University, 1965-1998. He pioneered the use of immunosuppressant drugs in transplants, preventing the rejection of grafts and transplanted organs. In 1987, Calne performed the first liver, lung and heart transplant. He lobbied for greater government involvement in organ donor programmes. Also a successful painter, Calne's work depicts clinical procedures and has been exhibited in many countries to promote awareness of transplantation.
