Throughout his career Chadwick, a theologian and historian, has been committed to demonstrating that the study of church history should be part of modern historiography. Chadwick served as both the Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History (1958-68) and the Regius chair of Modern History (1968-83). He has written on the Victorian Church, the role of the papacy, the Reformation and the Christian Church in the cold war.
