Footballer. Charlton and his brother, the England international Jack, came from the Northumbrian mining community of Ashington. He was a brilliant inside forward whose impeccable behaviour on the field is held up as an example to younger players. Charlton joined Manchester United in 1954, and survived the Munich aircrash in 1958 which killed some of his teammates. In 1966 he was a member of the England side that won the World Cup. He scored 49 goals for England playing a hundred and six times for his country. He retired from Manchester United in 1973, and became a director in 1984. He was knighted in 1994.
