Herbert Lionel Adolphus Hart

A practising lawyer and academic, Hart is widely regarded as the most important English-speaking legal philosopher of the twentieth century. He pioneered the revival of the neglected field of legal theory, combining philosophy and law, which earned him an international reputation. After studying at New College, Oxford, he became a barrister and practiced at the Chancery Bar from 1932 to 1940. During World War II he worked with British military intelligence. He did not return to his legal practice after the War, instead accepting a teaching fellowship in philosophy at New College, Oxford. He was Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford (1952-68) and Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford (1973-8).
