Sir Harry Lauder
(1870-1950), ComedianSitter in 21 portraits
Scottish born Lauder was initially employed as a miner, but quickly gained a reputation as a singer and comedian at local concert parties, and turned professional in 1895. He is best remembered for his songs I Love A Lassie, Roamin' In The Gloamin and the enduring Keep Right On To The End Of The Road, which he wrote in 1916 after his only son, Captain John Lauder, was killed in action. One of the most prodigious performers during the war, he toured extensively, promoting recruitment, fund-raising and entertaining the troops in France. He was knighted in 1919 for his outstanding contribution to the war effort.

I am the great-nephew of Sir Harry Lauder (his brother Matthew was my great-grandfather) and I have the original and large family paintings of him, his wife, and their son, all painted by Cowan Dobson, R.B.A., which used to hang in Lauder Hall, and before that in Laudervale at Dunoon.

Sir Harry Lauder is my great great uncle, would like to know more about his brothers and sisters. I am related through my great grandad who was called Joseph mcgunker Hamilton Welch girvan.

I refer to the post by Karen Tilly. I can see no family connexions whatsoever with people of these names in our family papers and associated genealogical research, which is virtually complete.
