Max Beloff, Baron Beloff

(1913-1999), Historian

After winning a first in modern history, gained a research fellowship at Corpus, and published Public Order And Popular Disturbances, 1660-1714, in 1938. He saw wartime service in the Royal Corps of Signals but, invalided, he resumed an appointment as assistant lecturer in history at Manchester. In 1946 he was appointed Nuffield Reader in Comparative Study of Institutions at Oxford University. Beloff went on to become Gladstone Professor of Government and Public Administration, also at Oxford, in 1957, which he held until 1974. Beloff was the first Principal at University College, Buckingham, between 1974 and 1979 after which he was given the title of Professor Emeritus. He was made a life peer in 1981.

Max Beloff attended the then revolutionary King Alfred’s School in Golders Green along with his sister Nora.
I know because my father, Roger Wilton, was a peer and often spoke of them and all his other friends at KAS including David Thomson, Alan Davis, Peggy van Prague (sp?), Mary Moser (married name) etc
