Charles Cuthbert Powell Williams, Baron Williams of Elvel

(1933-2019), Businessman, banker, Labour peer and cricketer

Labour peer. Worked for many years in the banking industry, serving as managing director of Baring Bros (1971-7) and of Henry Ansbacher & Co. (1982-5). After graduating from Christ Church, Oxford, Williams worked from 1958 to 1964 for British Petroleum. He moved into banking, working first for the Guatemala branch of the Bank of London and Montreal and then for Eurofinance SA Paris. After retiring from Henry Ansbacher & Co. in 1985, William was director of Mirror Group Newspapers from 1985 to 1992. He was made a life peer in 1985 and sat for Labour in the House of Lords. He played eighty-seven first-class cricket matches, forty of them for Essex County Cricket Club.
