Selected by Sir Kenneth MacMillan to dance the leading role in his new ballet, The Prince of the Pagodas, Bussell became the Royal Ballet's youngest ever Principal Dancer, aged 20. She was voted dancer of the year in 1990. Her classical repertoire includes Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. After the birth of her second daughter in 2004 she made a great return with the New York City Ballet, resuming her Principal role with the Royal Ballet for the 2005 season. After retiring as a ballerina in June 2007, she has created a series of children's books about ballet. She is President of the Royal Academy of Dance and a judge on the BBC television programme Strictly Come Dancing.
