Born in Liverpool, John Lennon was a singer, songwriter, artist and member of the Beatles. Lennon married Cynthia Powell in August 1962 and later married Yoko Ono who he met at the Indica Gallery in London. In 1970, the Beatles split and Lennon embarked on a solo career. Although his first solo album Imagine and the song with the same name, reflected many of his personal and idealistic dreams for the world, it became the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album of his career. On 8 December 1980, he became a victim of an assassination by a crazed fan. He died on the doorstep of The Dakota building in New York, aged forty.
