British novelist David Cornwell served as a diplomat in Germany and was best known for his espionage novels such as The Spy who came in from the Cold (1963) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974). Other works included Smiley's People, (1980) and A Perfect Spy (1986) which he wrote under the pseudonym of John le Carré.
