Brian Morris, Baron Morris of Castle Morris
(1930-2001), University professor, poet, politician and trustee of the National Portrait GallerySitter in 3 portraits
A poet, critic and professor of literature. He became the Labour Party's deputy chief whip and education spokesman in the House of Lords. Born and educated in Cardiff, Morris read English at Worcester College, Oxford. After tutoring in Old and Middle English at Oxford, he was professor of English Literature at Sheffield University from 1971 to 1981. From 1964 to 1986, Morris edited the New Mermaid dramatists, and from 1974 to 1982 the New Arden Shakespeare. He joined the board of the National Portrait Gallery in 1977. In 1980, he was named principal of what St David's University College, part of the University of Wales. In 1990, Morris was made a life peer.
