César Milstein

Molecular biologist. In 1958 Milstein travelled from Buenos Aires on a British Council scholarship to study for his PhD at Cambridge University. At Cambridge, Frederick Sanger encouraged Milstein to develop his research in antibodies, the blood proteins involved in immunity. Milstein is best known for producing the first monoclonal antibodies, using a technique developed at the Medical Research Council. Milstein was awarded the 1984 Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine, which he shared with George Köhler and Niels Jerne.
