Stanley Lees Giffard

Stanley Lees Giffard trained in the law and was called to the Bar in 1811, although his practice was not particularly successful. He began his journalistic career as a political writer on the St James's Chronicle, in 1819 becoming the journal's editor. In 1827 Charles Baldwin launched the Standard and appointed Giffard as the first editor, a post in which he remained for thirty years. Under his editorship, the paper became recognised as London's most reactionary voice. Giffard was passionately anti-Catholic and bitterly opposed to emancipation.
