Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, the son of eminent economist Joseph Belsky, Franta Belsky fled with his family to England after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. He returned to Prague after the war to find that many of his relations had perished in the Holocaust. Belsky designed a Paratroop memorial, and a medal in honour of Emil Zatopek, before fleeing to England again to escape the Communist takeover of 1948. His work includes not only traditional statues and busts, but also large-scale more abstract works.
