Nadar

(1820-1910), Photographer

Nadar (Gaspard Félix Tournachon)

Artist associated with 54 portraits
Born in Paris in 1820, Nadar, was well known for the caricatures he produced, which appeared in Le Charivari, long before he took up photography. He opened his first photography studio in 1854 in Paris, and was praised for the manner by which he captured the true character of his sitters. He photographed many prominent Parisians, most of whom were his associates. Nadar soon became interested in different types of photography and spent increasingly more time away from his studio. As one of the first persons to use artificial light, he photographed the catacombs of Paris. Nadar left his studio to his son Paul before he died in 1910. The National Portrait Gallery holds more than 35 of his photographs.
