Gerald Scarfe was born in London in 1936 and studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. By 1961 he was contributing cartoons to Punch. Work for Private Eye from 1962 onwards brought his name to a wider public and regularly caused outrage. He has contributed political cartoons to the Sunday Times since 1965 and to the New Yorker. In addition, he is much acclaimed for innovative contributions to theatre design and to animated films, including Pink Floyd's The Wall (1981) and Walt Disney's Hercules (1987). He held retrospective exhibitions at the Royal Festival Hall, 1983, and at the National Portrait Gallery, 1998.
