Warhol was born and studied in Pittsburgh, later moving to New York where he had his first solo show in 1952. In 1960 he began to paint from mass-produced images and consumer goods such as Campbell's soup cans. At his studio, known as the Factory, his assistants mass-produced these using silkscreens. In the 1960s Warhol was at the centre of the Pop Art movement, making experimental films, painting portraits of celebrities, photographing nudes, producing a record and founding the magazine Interview. In 1968 he was shot, bringing the Factory era to an end. In 1970 a major retrospective, organized by the Pasadena Art Museum, toured the United States and Europe. In 1994 the Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh.
