The original of which this is a copy is now on permanent loan from the St Edmundsbury Heritage Service to the National Trust at Ickworth, Augustus Hervey's family home. The Ickworth Collection also contains an identical copy by Spanton.
William Silas Spanton's dates are 1845-1930. Although he trained at the Royal Academy Schools, his father's early death forced him to return home to run the family's photography business in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, which he did until 1901, when he sold the firm to Harry Isaac Jarman and took up a career as a copyist.
