David Weatherall's outstanding contribution has been to bring the modern science of molecular biology to the bedside, particularly in the study of blood diseases, in which he specialises. An excellent clinician and teacher, he is also somebody who has thought deeply about the place of medicine and doctors in society as a whole. Through his work as senior editor of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine his influence has extended far beyond Britain.
