Soldier, politician and businessman. Lord de L'Isle served with the Grenadier Guards and was awarded the Victoria Cross for an action demonstrating 'superb courage and utter disregard of danger' during the Anzio landings in February 1944. He served as Secretary of State for Air in Churchill's 1951 administration and as Governor General of Australia (1961-5). He was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery from 1953-61 and from 1965-72.
