Writer, pacifist and feminist; served as VAD during First World War; works include two autobiographical volumes; Testament of Youth (1933) and Testament of Experience (1957), and also Testament of Friendship (1940), a commemoration of her friendship with Winifred Holtby; joined Peace pledge Union (1937) and campaigned as a pacifist during Second World War; mother of Shirley Williams.
