(Karl Anton) Reinhold Thiele

Born in Hamelin, Germany, Reinhold Thiele served his photographic apprenticeship with the daguerreotypist and later composite photographer Wunder. He first came to London in 1878 to work for William Henry Prestwich and in 1880 joined the London Stereoscopic Company, initially as a water colourist and then as an operator. In 1894, working as Symmons and Thiele, and at first specialising in football teams, he became one of the first press photographers. He set up a portrait studio on Chancery Lane, where he pioneered flashlight photography.
