Gary Rhodes

(1960-2019), Chef and restaurateur

Restaurateur, cookery writer and celebrity chef, known for his love of British cuisine. After training at Thanet Technical College in Broadstairs he worked abroad in various jobs including Commis Chef at the Amsterdam Hilton. He moved back to London in 1982 before becoming Head Chef at the Castle Hotel in Somerset in 1986, where he received his first Michelin star at the age of twenty-six. In 1990 he returned to London to become Head Chef at the Greenhouse Restaurant in Mayfair and subsequently opened a number of his own restaurants. His first TV appearances were on Hot Chefs in 1987, which were followed in 1994 by the TV series Rhodes Around Britain.
