Born in India, Christie trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. Her first major film successes were Billy Liar (1963) and her Oscar-winning role of Diana Scott in Darling (1965), both directed by John Schlesinger. Other successes include Doctor Zhivago (1965), Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Shampoo (1975) and Heaven Can Wait (1978). She received a second Oscar nomination for McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) and was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in 1997. Other films include Finding Neverland (2004), Away from Her (2006) for which she received an Oscar nomination, and Stephen Poliakoff's Glorious 39 (2009).
