William Devereux spent over fifty years on the stage as an author and an actor. He was born William Bull in 1871 in Kimbolton, England. He began his stage career as an actor starring in a wide range of plays, from comedy to melodrama and Shakesphere. He married Agnes Thorpe, an American and lived and worked successfully for eight years in the USA.
He wrote several plays, usually of a romantic nature such as “Henry of Navarre”, Robin Hood with Henry Hamilton (1906) Sir Walter Raleigh (1909) and the ‘Wooing of Katherine Parr” (1927). He acted with Osmond Tearle and Mrs Langtry. He was a stalwart of actors rights and involved in the work and proceedings of the stage unions.
Agnes and William had one son, Wilfred born in 1898. He also worked in the theatre and in film.
