Stephen Alfred Chandler was born on 5th. February 1874 in Richmond Surrey, to Charles and Susan, nee Hymas. He trained at a local photographers in Richmond, then moved to Southampton to set up his own photographic business at 261 Christchurch Road. Later he opened up another shop in Exeter in the Arcade under the title ' Arcade Studio'; these premises were bombed in the second world war and he moved his business to 11, Heavitree Road, which was still in Exeter. Sadly he died on 28th. May 1943, but his photographic business continued with the same staff, led by a Ms Greenaway. Stephen was dad to four children, three girls and one boy, my father. Only Lily, his eldest, followed him into the business as a negative retoucher.
